At ages 3–5, the best maths doesn't happen at a desk — it happens in the kitchen, on the stairs, at bath time. Little and often beats long and formal every time.
Here are five everyday moments that build real number sense. Pick one to try today.
Count the stairs as you climb. Count peas onto the plate. Count claps. The trick: touch or move each thing as you say each number — that builds "one number for one thing".
Any board game with a dice is gold. Encourage your child to say the number without counting the dots — that's subitising, and it's named right in the Early Learning Goals.
"There are 6 grapes and 2 of us — how many each?" Sharing one-by-one teaches equal groups and early division, long before those words matter.
"Who has more peas?" "Are these the same?" Comparing amounts is half of the EYFS number goals. You don't need exact answers — the comparing is the learning.
One golden rule: keep it light. If it stops being fun, stop. Curiosity is what you're protecting.
