Animals come in groups

There are millions of different animals in the world. Scientists sort them into groups based on what they have in common.

Mammals

Birds
๐ŸŸ
Fish
๐ŸฆŽ
Reptiles
๐Ÿธ
Amphibians

Each group has its own features. Mammals have fur and feed milk to their babies. Birds have feathers and lay eggs. Fish live in water. Reptiles are scaly. Amphibians can live in water OR on land.

What animals eat

Different animals eat different things. There are three big diet groups:

๐Ÿฆ
Carnivores
Meat only
lion, shark, eagle
๐Ÿฐ
Herbivores
Plants only
rabbit, cow, sheep
๐Ÿป
Omnivores
Both!
bear, pig, human

You are an omnivore. Most of us eat fruit, vegetables, bread and meat, fish, or eggs.

Your amazing body

Humans are animals too! We are mammals. Your body has lots of important parts:

Head ยท Eyes ยท Mouth ยท Arms ยท Hands ยท Legs ยท Feet

And inside, you have a heart (that pumps blood), lungs (for breathing), and a brain (for thinking and feeling).

Your five senses

You have five senses that tell you about the world. Each sense uses a different body part:

๐Ÿ‘๏ธSight โ€” your eyes see colours and shapes
๐Ÿ‘‚Hearing โ€” your ears pick up sounds
๐Ÿ‘ƒSmell โ€” your nose finds nice (and not-so-nice) scents
๐Ÿ‘…Taste โ€” your tongue tells you sweet, salty, sour
โœ‹Touch โ€” your skin feels hot, cold, soft, hard

Be a scientist!

Real scientists observe, which means they look closely and ask questions.

Try this today or this weekend:

  • Look out the window. What animals can you see?
  • Which group does each one belong to?
  • Are they a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore?
  • What might they have eaten today?

Top tip: a good scientist never stops asking why. Why do birds have feathers? Why do fish have gills? Keep asking โ€” every question makes you learn something new!
