What schools expect

This sits in the geometry strand of the maths curriculum:

Year 1: Describe position, direction, and movement. Whole, half, quarter, and three-quarter turns.
Year 2: Same, plus distinguishing rotation as a turn from right angles. Clockwise vs anti-clockwise.

The reason it matters: this is the foundation for KS2 geometry, mapping, and computing. Children who can talk about position fluently find coding (Bee-Bots, Scratch Jr) much easier.

Vocabulary children should hear daily

Sprinkle these words into ordinary conversation:

Position: on, under, above, below, between, beside, next to, in front of, behind, near, far
Direction: left, right, forwards, backwards, up, down, towards, away from
Turn: quarter, half, three-quarter, whole turn
Rotation: clockwise, anti-clockwise, right angle

Examples in real life: "Put your shoes under the bench." "Walk forwards three steps, then left." "Turn the lid anti-clockwise to open it."

Four games

Five minutes here and there is enough.

1. Simon Says — turn edition
"Simon says quarter turn clockwise." "Simon says half turn." Add normal Simon Says rules. Hilarity.
2. Treasure hunt with directions
Hide a small thing. Write/say instructions: "Go to the door. Quarter turn left. Walk 5 steps forwards. Look up."
3. The robot game
Your child is the robot. You give instructions. They have to follow them exactly — including the turns. Then swap.
4. Tidy-up directions
"Put the red book ON the shelf. Put the green book BESIDE the red one. Put the blue book BELOW them." Sneaky learning.

If your child enjoys this, they'll probably love coding. Position and direction language is exactly what programming uses.

Worth knowing about:

  • Bee-Bot — a chunky physical floor robot. Many primary schools have them. Children programme it to move using arrow buttons.
  • Scratch Jr — a free app for ages 5-7. Drag-and-drop blocks to make characters move.
  • Hour of Code — code.org has free puzzles aimed at KS1.

Most parents worry coding is hard. It isn't — at this age, it's just turning the position-and-direction game into something on a screen. If your child can do the robot game above, they can do Scratch Jr.
