Everyone thinks "spoken language" means TALKING. It doesn't. Listening is just as important — maybe MORE important.
A great talker is also a great listener. Today we'll look at five things that make you good at both.
Good listeners do four things:
Try this now. Find a grown-up. Ask them: "What was the best part of your day?" — and just listen. Don't talk until they've finished.
In a real conversation, people take turns. One person talks, the other listens. Then they swap.
The signal it's your turn: the other person stops talking and looks at you. THAT is the gap.
If two people both talk at once, no-one can hear anything. So if you find yourself talking over someone, STOP — and let them finish.
A great question keeps a conversation going. Boring questions get one-word answers.
Good questions usually start with What, Why, How, Tell me about…
When your friend has said something, don't just change the subject. ADD to what they said.
That's called building on the conversation. It's a very grown-up skill.
People won't always agree with you. That's GOOD — it means everyone gets to think.
How to disagree without being mean:
You're a great listener. You take turns. You ask good questions. You build on what others say. You disagree politely. Now you're ready for ANY conversation.
You finished this lesson. You worked hard and learned something new today. 🎉
