Look around the room. Every object you can see is made of a material — wood, plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard, brick or rock.
The big question of Y2 science: WHY did someone choose THAT material for THAT job? The answer is always in the material's properties.
A window needs to let light through, so we pick glass — it's transparent.
A saucepan needs to handle heat and not melt, so we pick metal — it's strong and heat-resistant.

Some materials change shape if you push or pull them. There are four main ways:
Back in 1888, bicycle tyres were just hard metal hoops. They were a bumpy nightmare to ride!
John Dunlop was a Scottish vet whose son hated his bumpy bike. So Dunlop invented the pneumatic tyre — a rubber tube filled with air. Suddenly bicycles became comfortable. Cars used the idea too.
That's real history. Every wheel on every car you see today owes a little to John Dunlop.
Charles Macintosh (1823) — a Scottish chemist who worked out how to coat fabric with rubber to make it waterproof. Waterproof raincoats are still called "mackintoshes" in some places, after him.
John McAdam (early 1800s) — a Scottish engineer who invented a way of building road surfaces from layered crushed rock. We still call modern road surfaces "tarmac" — short for "tar macadam".
You've now done what a real materials scientist does: looked at a job, thought about the properties needed, and matched a material to it.
Next time you see something — a chair, a phone, a juice carton — ask yourself:
"What is it made of? Why THAT material? What would happen if it was made of something else?"
