No worksheets needed
The Y2 materials topic is the easiest part of KS1 science to support at home, because everything around you is already made of one of the eight materials on the curriculum: wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper or cardboard.
You don't need to set anything up. You just need to ask questions.
1. The "what's it made of?" game

Point at five things in the room. Ask: "What's it made of?" Then ask the better question: "Why THAT material?"
The chair = wood (strong, doesn't bend under you). The window = glass (you can see through it). The mug = ceramic or china (handles hot drinks). That's the Y2 lesson done.
2. The recycling bin lesson

Tip the recycling out. Sort it into piles by material: plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, glass.
Now ask: "Why was this milk bottle made of plastic and not glass? Why are pizza boxes cardboard and not wood?" Answers come easily once you start.
3. The shape-changing kitchen

If you bake or cook, you SEE materials change shape: dough bends and stretches, foil twists, a banana squashes.
Just use the proper words. "Look — you're STRETCHING the dough." "You're BENDING the spaghetti." Those are the Y2 vocabulary words.
One thing to remember: the Y2 curriculum wants children to know that not all materials change shape. Glass and brick don't bend. Wood doesn't stretch. Bringing this up turns a kitchen moment into a real lesson.
