For the student — how to do this
This test has homophones — words that SOUND the same but are SPELT differently (like "their" and "there"). You have to pick the right one from the sentence.
For parents and carers
The stretch Y2 spelling assessment. Focuses on homophones (their/there/they're; to/too/two; here/hear; see/sea) and the harder common exception words.
Homophones are universally tricky — they require contextual understanding, not just spelling. Discuss the meaning differences (THEIR = belonging; THERE = a place; THEY'RE = they are).
For teachers and tutors
Stretch Y2 spelling assessment. Question types: homophones in context (6), harder exception words (4), complex suffix application (3), Y2 grapheme patterns (2).
How to check the work
Auto-marked. Diagnostic: homophone errors signal a meaning-vs-sound mismatch. Practice in context: writing sentences using THEIR / THERE / THEY'RE in different positions.
