For the student — how to do this
You're going to learn about fractions — when something is split into equal parts. The two main fractions in this test are halves (two equal parts) and quarters (four equal parts).
Read each question carefully. Look at any pictures — they'll help you see the answer.
For parents and carers
The warm-up fractions test for Year 1. Covers the foundation: recognising a half as one of two equal parts and a quarter as one of four equal parts of shapes and small quantities of objects.
The critical idea at this stage is "equal parts" — children often think any two parts of a shape make halves. The questions probe this misconception directly.
For teachers and tutors
Year 1 fractions warm-up. Coverage: definition of "half" and "quarter" (4 questions), identifying halved/quartered shapes (4 questions), halves of small even quantities (2 questions), quarters of small quantities (2 questions).
Common misconceptions: believing any partition into 2 parts = half; conflating "a quarter" with "any small part"; not recognising halves/quarters of non-symmetric shapes.
How to check the work
Auto-marked with explanations. Most useful: re-discussing wrong answers using real food (cutting an apple, sharing biscuits) — fractions are best learned through doing.
