About this resource

The stretch test for confident Year 2 pupils — equivalence, comparison, two-step problems, fractions in real measures.

What you'll learn

  • Equivalence (2/4 = 1/2) DfE NC Maths KS1 fractions (Y2)
  • Fractions of a quantity DfE NC Maths KS1 fractions (Y2)

For the student — how to do this

This test is harder. Some questions compare fractions (which is bigger?), some have two steps, and some are about fractions in real life (like cutting things into pieces).

The trickiest idea is equivalence — when two fractions that LOOK different are actually the same amount (like 2/4 = 1/2). Take your time!

For parents and carers

The stretch fractions test for greater-depth Y2 pupils. Pushes into equivalence (2/4 = 1/2), comparison (which is bigger?), and multi-step problems involving fractions.

Equivalence is the gateway concept that unlocks the Y3 and Y4 fraction work. A pupil who securely understands that "two quarters" and "one half" are the same physical amount will fly through KS2 fractions.

For teachers and tutors

Stretch assessment targeting Y2 greater-depth fraction objectives + Y3 readiness. Question types: equivalence identification (4), fraction comparison (3), two-step word problems (4), fractions across measures (3), and missing-value reasoning (1).

Pass mark 60% reflects difficulty. This identifies pupils ready for early Y3 work; pupils scoring below 40% are not ready and should consolidate the Main Test material.

How to check the work

Auto-marked with worked explanations. For equivalence questions especially, paper-folding or food-cutting demonstrations make the concept concrete in a way pure number-work cannot.
