How to check the work
Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with Algebra — Module 2: Simplifying & expanding brackets
This parent guide relates the page examples with a practical study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, GCSE, Year 10, Year 11, E-Learning Module. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what firm work should demonstrate.
Prepare a focused session
Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to anticipate the understanding, vocabulary or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify instruction words, values, signals, constraints or unfamiliar terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove diversions and collect suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the work indicates firm understanding and uncertainty. A reflective pause often supports recall better than an immediate answer.
Make thinking visible
Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a complex problem into individual steps, sketch a representation, arrange details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another plan could work. When work stops, provide a carefully scaled hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, reduce the choice, then demonstrate only the next step. Return responsibility immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals confusions and practises accurate subject language.
Check accuracy and understanding
Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a concise note of the change. For a correct answer, seek support and one independent check. This distinguishes secure understanding from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.
Consolidate and extend
Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps returning to terminology, practising a calculation, adding details or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than immediate repetition.
The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
Sample questions and answers
Try five questions from this exact activity. Review each authored answer and explanation, then note which ideas need another look. Compare the options and explain why the answer fits. Say the reasoning aloud or write a short justification before opening the interactive player to complete the activity and save progress.
Simplify 5x + 3x
- 8x
- 8x²
- 15x
- 2x
Sample answer: 8x
Explanation: Add the coefficients of like terms: 5 + 3 = 8, so 8x.
Simplify 7a − 2a
- 5a
- 9a
- 5
- 5a²
Sample answer: 5a
Explanation: 7 − 2 = 5, so 5a.
Simplify 4x + 2y + 3x
- 9xy
- 7x + 2y
- 6x + 3y
- 9x
Sample answer: 7x + 2y
Explanation: Collect the x terms: 4x + 3x = 7x; the 2y stays.
Simplify x × x
- 2x
- x²
- x
- x³
Sample answer: x²
Explanation: x × x = x².
Simplify 2a × 3b
- 5ab
- 6ab
- 6a + b
- 5a + b
Sample answer: 6ab
Explanation: Multiply numbers (2 × 3 = 6) and letters: 6ab.
