What learners develop in Science

Science resources here connect substantive ideas in biology, chemistry and physics with the practices used to test and refine explanations. Choose material that lets pupils observe carefully, ask answerable questions, measure or model, record patterns and evaluate whether evidence supports a claim. Working scientifically is not a separate topic: it should be taught through the relevant content, from plants and materials in primary science to forces, reactions, cells and energy later on. Practical work needs suitable supervision and risk assessment; digital activities can prepare, explain or review an investigation but do not replace first-hand experience where the curriculum calls for it.

Learning science through ideas and evidence

Science learning combines a growing body of knowledge with ways of investigating the natural world. Begin by identifying the scientific idea, then connect observations and measurements to that idea. Practical work is strongest when the question, variables and method are clear; activity without reasoning does not by itself build understanding.

Ask learners to predict with a reason, record evidence accurately and decide whether the result supports the prediction. Repeat measurements when reliability matters and distinguish a measurement error from natural variation. Diagrams, models and analogies can make invisible processes easier to discuss, but every model has limits that should be acknowledged. Explanations should use cause-and-effect language and appropriate scientific vocabulary rather than simply restating the observation.
