About this resource and curriculum

Children spot and name colours around them, mix primary colours to discover that red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green and red and blue make purple, explore light and dark shades, draw a self-portrait and build a colour collection from objects at home. One short make is auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on drawing, painting and collecting tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer sheet. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

Get the most from this

We are going to make five colourful things! Spot colours around your room, mix paints to magic up new colours, make light and dark shades, draw a picture of yourself and collect colours from home. Answer the little colour questions on screen and I'll check them, or print the book and get creating. Ask a grown-up to join in — this is all for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) art book about colour and creating. Sit alongside your child with crayons, pencils or paints. Let them spot and name colours, really mix red, yellow and blue to see orange, green and purple appear, make light and dark shades, draw themselves and build a little colour collection at home. There is no pass or fail — praise the making and the talking, not neatness.

A five-make Reception activity book covering colour and creating from the EYFS Expressive Arts & Design area of learning and the Creating with Materials ELG: naming colours, mixing primary colours (red + yellow = orange, blue + yellow = green, red + blue = purple), light and dark shades, self-portrait drawing and a home colour-collection task. Make 2 is auto-marked; Makes 1, 3, 4 and 5 are open, practical creating tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use, in class or at home.

Make 2 is checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each colour-mixing answer and gives friendly feedback. Makes 1, 3, 4 and 5 are open drawing, painting and collecting tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and celebrate the creating together.

How to study with Colour & Create (EYFS)

This parent guide links the page examples with a practical study routine. The current resource is labelled Expressive Arts and Design, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what effective work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to recognise the knowledge, vocabulary or technique they may need. Scan each sample and recognise instruction words, values, signals, limits or new terms. Agree a realistic time window, clear interruptions and prepare suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent first attempt so the response shows secure understanding and uncertainty. A reflective pause often supports retrieval better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, break a extended problem into individual steps, make a diagram, arrange details, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, give a graduated hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return control immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes misconceptions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the first point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a brief description of the improvement. For a correct answer, ask for justification and one independent check. This differentiates secure knowledge from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding details or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
