Composing Music KS3

Composing Music KS3 is a five-mission Year 8 music activity book mapped to the DfE National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Music. Pupils learn the building blocks of a composition — melody (a tune), rhythm and a motif (a short, repeated idea) — then shape a piece with structure and form (verse-chorus, binary AB and ternary ABA) and texture (thin and thick layers). They add harmony and simple chords, understanding a triad as a three-note chord, and finish by composing to a brief for a mood or film scene, notating or recording their ideas with music technology such as a DAW. Auto-marked questions are checked instantly on screen, or the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and is fully SEND-friendly with high-contrast and large-text modes.

What you'll learn

  • Composing

Inside this resource

  • 5 printable pages
  • Answer key included

For the student — how to do this

You're going to work through five composing missions. Answer on screen and I'll check your answers straight away, or print the book and work on paper. Hum your melodies and clap your rhythms out loud to make the ideas stick!

For parents and carers

This is a KS3 (Year 8) music composing activity book. You don't need any music training — the answer key covers the knowledge questions, and the composing tasks are open. Encourage your child to hum motifs and tap rhythms so the ideas connect to real sound.

For teachers and tutors

A five-mission Year 8 activity book covering DfE KS3 Music composing: melody, rhythm and motif; structure/form (verse-chorus, binary AB, ternary ABA); texture (thin/thick layers); harmony and triads; and composing to a brief using music technology (a DAW). Missions 1–3 are auto-marked; Missions 4 and 5 are open composing tasks. Suitable for starters, cover work or independent revision.

How to check the work

Missions 1–3 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback. Missions 4 and 5 are open composing tasks and are not auto-marked — use the answer sheet notes to check the motif and plan.
