How to check the work

Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with Edexcel GCSE Maths — Module 4: Ratio, proportion & rates

This parent guide relates the page examples with a usable study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, GCSE, Year 10, Year 11, E-Learning Module. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to identify the knowledge, terminology or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify command words, quantities, hints, constraints or unfamiliar terms. Agree a manageable time window, reduce diversions and gather useful tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the work indicates sound understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often aids remembering better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline key information, divide a complex problem into smaller steps, sketch a representation, arrange support, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, give a staged hint: repeat the goal, point towards a related example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return ownership straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a concise account of the change. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one self-directed check. This distinguishes confident knowledge from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding support or refining clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.

Sample questions and answers

Try five questions from this exact activity. Review each authored answer and explanation, then note which ideas need another look. Compare the options and explain why the answer fits. Say the reasoning aloud or write a short justification before opening the interactive player to complete the activity and save progress.
