Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to anticipate the understanding, terminology or technique they may need. Scan each sample and recognise action words, values, signals, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce interruptions and prepare appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the attempt reveals sound understanding and uncertainty. A reflective pause often aids retrieval better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline key information, separate a larger problem into smaller steps, make a representation, organise support, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another plan could work. When movement stops, offer a carefully scaled hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, limit the choice, then model only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes confusions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a concise description of the correction. For a correct answer, request reasoning and one self-directed check. This separates assured understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding support or improving clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than same-session repetition.
