How to study with EYFS Communication & Language — Module 2: Following instructions

This parent guide links the page examples with a practical study routine. The listed resource is labelled Communication and Language, Early Years (EYFS), Nursery, Reception, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to anticipate the ideas, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and spot action words, quantities, hints, limits or new terms. Agree a realistic time window, remove interruptions and gather appropriate materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the work reveals sound understanding and doubt. A concise pause often aids recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline key information, separate a larger problem into smaller steps, draw a model, arrange evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, offer a graduated hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals misconceptions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a concise note of the improvement. For a correct answer, ask for justification and one self-directed check. This separates secure ideas from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, practising a calculation, adding evidence or improving clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.

Sample questions and answers

Try five questions from this exact activity. Review each authored answer and explanation, then note which ideas need another look. Compare the options and explain why the answer fits. Say the reasoning aloud or write a short justification before opening the interactive player to complete the activity and save progress.
