Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Evolution of the Atmosphere
the early atmosphere came from intense volcanic activity and was mostly carbon dioxide. As the Earth cooled, water vapour condensed to form the oceans, which dissolved much of the carbon dioxide. Algae and plants then photosynthesised, releasing oxygen, while carbon was locked away in sediments and fossil fuels. Fire them off fast!
Round 2 โ Today's Air & Greenhouse Gases
today the air is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 0.04% carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gases โ carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane โ keep the Earth warm by absorbing infrared radiation. Snap them out!
Round 3 โ Pollutants from Fuels
complete combustion gives carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion makes toxic carbon monoxide. Oxides of nitrogen form at the high temperatures inside engines. Go!
Round 4 โ Potable & Waste Water
potable water is safe to drink. Fresh water is filtered to remove solids and sterilised (with chlorine, ozone or UV) to kill microbes. Sea water can be made drinkable by distillation. Quick sips โ go!
Round 5 โ Resources & Recycling
a renewable resource is replaced as fast as it is used; a finite one runs out. We reduce, reuse and recycle to save resources. Metals can be extracted from low-grade ores by bioleaching (bacteria) and phytomining (plants). Last round โ finish strong!
Suggestions for teaching
- Speed with accuracy. Encourage quick recall, but check the tricky pairs โ carbon monoxide versus carbon dioxide, and finite versus renewable.
- Tell the story in order. Volcanoes โ carbon-dioxide-rich air โ oceans dissolve carbon dioxide โ photosynthesis adds oxygen.
- Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
