Learning objectives
- angle rules โ on a straight line, at a point and in a triangle;
- polygon angles โ the (n โ 2) ร 180ยฐ interior sum and the 360ยฐ exterior rule;
- area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles;
- circle area (ฯrยฒ) and circumference (ฯd), using ฯ = 3.14 and in terms of ฯ;
- Pythagorasโ theorem (aยฒ + bยฒ = cยฒ) and basic right-angled trigonometry.
Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Angle Rules
angles on a straight line add to 180ยฐ, angles at a point add to 360ยฐ, and the angles in a triangle add to 180ยฐ. Between parallel lines, co-interior (allied) angles add to 180ยฐ.
Round 2 โ Polygon Angles
interior angles of an n-sided polygon add to (n โ 2) ร 180ยฐ. Exterior angles always add to 360ยฐ, so a regular polygonโs exterior angle is 360ยฐ รท n and its interior angle is 180ยฐ โ the exterior angle.
Round 3 โ Area & Perimeter
rectangle area = base ร height; triangle area = ยฝ ร base ร height. Perimeter is the total distance all the way round the edge.
Round 4 โ Circles
circle area = ฯrยฒ and circumference = ฯd. Each question tells you whether to use ฯ = 3.14 or to leave the answer in terms of ฯ.
Round 5 โ Pythagoras & Trig
Pythagorasโ theorem: aยฒ + bยฒ = cยฒ, where c is the hypotenuse (the longest side). The triples 6-8-10 and 8-15-17 give exact hypotenuses. For angles use SOHCAHTOA: opposite = hypotenuse ร sin(angle).
Suggestions for teaching
- Name the rule first. Ask learners to state the angle or shape rule before typing โ recall speed comes from knowing which rule applies.
- Drill the triples. 6-8-10 and 8-15-17 give instant hypotenuses โ check them with aยฒ + bยฒ = cยฒ.
- Read the ฯ instruction. Point out when to use ฯ = 3.14 and when to leave an answer in terms of ฯ โ both appear in GCSE papers.
- Beat the clock. Re-run the drill timed to build fluent, exam-ready recall.
