Round 1 โ List Averages Blitz
order the list first: 3, 5, 6, 8, 8. Mean = total รท how many; median = the middle value; range = largest โ smallest.
Round 2 โ Frequency Table Sprint
mean from a table = total of (value ร frequency) รท total frequency. The mode is the value with the highest frequency.
Round 3 โ Estimated Mean Dash
use the midpoint of each class: estimated mean = total of (midpoint ร frequency) รท total frequency. The modal class has the highest frequency.
Round 4 โ Pie Chart Angles
each pupil is worth 360ยฐ รท total. Then each slice = frequency ร that value. Check your slices add to 360ยฐ.
Round 5 โ Correlation & Data Types
positive correlation = both rise together; negative = one rises as the other falls. Discrete data is counted in set values (shoe size, goals); continuous data is measured (height, time).
Suggestions for teaching
- Speed then accuracy. Treat each round as a timed recall drill, then check every answer on screen.
- Order the list first. For the list round, insist on writing the ordered values before reading off median and range.
- Midpoints, then divide. For grouped data, model (midpoint ร frequency), sum, then divide by the total frequency โ and round only at the end.
- Degrees per item. For pie charts, fix 360ยฐ รท total first, then multiply by each frequency.
