Activities in this book
Round 1 — Wave Types & Properties
in a transverse wave the vibrations are at 90° (perpendicular) to the direction of energy transfer, like water ripples and light. In a longitudinal wave the vibrations are parallel to the energy transfer, with compressions and rarefactions, like sound. The amplitude is the maximum displacement from rest. Go fast!
Round 2 — The Wave Equation v = fλ
the wave-speed equation is v = fλ (speed = frequency × wavelength): v in m/s, f in Hz, λ in m. Rearrange to f = v ÷ λ to find a frequency. Quote the equation, put the numbers in, then calculate — at speed!
Round 3 — Period & the EM Spectrum
the period is the time for one wave, T = 1 ÷ f (seconds). The electromagnetic spectrum runs radio, micro, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma — longest wavelength to shortest. So gamma has the shortest wavelength, and visible light sits between infrared and ultraviolet.
Round 4 — EM Uses & Magnets
match each EM wave to its use: radio for broadcasting, microwaves for cooking and satellites, infrared for heating and remote controls, X-rays for medical images. A permanent magnet keeps its magnetism all the time; magnetic field lines always run from the north pole to the south pole.
Round 5 — Motor Effect & Transformers
a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field feels a force: F = BIl (force = magnetic flux density × current × length). A transformer changes the voltage of an a.c. supply, with Vp ÷ Vs = np ÷ ns, so Vs = Vp × (ns ÷ np). Last round — finish strong!
Suggestions for teaching
- Equation first. Encourage quick recall, but always quote v = fλ or F = BIl and substitute with units before calculating.
- Chant the spectrum. Radio, micro, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma — longest wavelength to shortest — until it is automatic.
- Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
