About this resource and curriculum

Through five gentle games led by a grown-up, children listen carefully to sounds, stories and simple instructions, recognise the sounds all around us from animals to vehicles, learn to look at the person who is speaking, follow one-step and two-step instructions, and enjoy listening games such as Simon Says and a home sound hunt. A short set of easy sound questions is auto-marked on screen, and the whole book can be printed with an answer key. There is no pass or fail. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

Get the most from this

We're going to play five listening games with a grown-up. Make your good listening ears, sit nice and still, and listen carefully. You can answer the sound questions on screen and I'll check them, or print the book and play on paper. There is no pass or fail — just have fun!

This is a gentle Reception (EYFS) listening book for you to play together. Sit close, make the animal and everyday sounds out loud, and encourage your child to look at you while you talk. Start with one instruction and build up to two. Keep it short, warm and playful — praise good listening, not right answers.

A five-game Reception activity book for the DfE EYFS Communication and Language area, Listening and Attention strand of Development Matters: listening to sounds, stories and instructions; recognising sounds around us; paying attention and looking at the speaker; following one- and two-step instructions; and listening games (Simon Says, sound hunt). Play 2 carries a short set of auto-marked sound questions; the rest are open, adult-led play. Designed for gentle, no-pass/fail use.

Only Play 2 has auto-marked sound questions, checked with the “Check my answers” button, which gives friendly feedback. All the other games are open, shared play and are not scored — enjoy them together and check against the answer sheet notes.

How to study with Good Listening (EYFS)

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Communication and Language, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what successful work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to anticipate the knowledge, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and spot instruction words, quantities, clues, conditions or new terms. Agree a focused time window, remove diversions and gather suitable materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent opening attempt so the work reveals firm understanding and uncertainty. A concise pause often strengthens retrieval better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, break a complex problem into shorter steps, sketch a diagram, organise details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, provide a graduated hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return ownership immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals misconceptions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the opening point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a concise description of the change. For a correct answer, seek justification and one independent check. This separates confident knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding details or developing clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
