How to check the work
Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with KS2 GPS — Module 5: Spelling rules & patterns
This parent guide relates the page examples with a structured study routine. The present resource is labelled English, Key Stage 2, Year 3, Year 4, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what firm work should demonstrate.
Prepare a focused session
Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise command words, quantities, hints, conditions or new terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove interruptions and collect appropriate materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed first attempt so the response shows firm understanding and gaps. A quiet pause often strengthens recall better than an instant answer.
Make thinking visible
Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, divide a complex problem into shorter steps, sketch a model, sort details, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another strategy could work. When progress stops, offer a carefully scaled hint: repeat the goal, point towards a related example, limit the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals confusions and practises specific subject language.
Check accuracy and understanding
Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to identify the first point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a short note of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one self-directed check. This separates confident understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.
Consolidate and extend
Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding details or developing clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives better information than instant repetition.
The interactive player, downloadable file and capture answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
