Study guidance and sample questions

How to study with Master Negative Numbers

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 3, Year 7, Year 8, E-Learning Module. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what sound work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus side by side. Ask the learner to predict the knowledge, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify action words, quantities, clues, constraints or new terms. Agree a focused time window, clear diversions and prepare useful materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the work reveals sound understanding and gaps. A quiet pause often aids remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline key information, divide a complex problem into individual steps, design a representation, arrange details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another plan could work. When movement stops, provide a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a relevant example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return responsibility straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals confusions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short note of the improvement. For a correct answer, request reasoning and one self-directed check. This separates assured knowledge from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding details or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.

Sample questions and answers

Try five questions from this exact activity. Review each authored answer and explanation, then note which ideas need another look. Compare the options and explain why the answer fits. Say the reasoning aloud or write a short justification before opening the interactive player to complete the activity and save progress.
