Study guidance and sample questions

How to study with Master Ratio

This parent guide relates the page examples with a usable study routine. The listed resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 3, Year 7, Year 8, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what effective work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to anticipate the knowledge, vocabulary or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify action words, amounts, clues, limits or new terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove diversions and gather useful materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the work shows secure understanding and gaps. A short pause often strengthens remembering better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a complex problem into smaller steps, sketch a representation, sort support, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another strategy could work. When work stops, provide a carefully scaled hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then show only the next step. Return responsibility straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals confusions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the first point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a short note of the correction. For a correct answer, seek support and one unaided check. This differentiates assured knowledge from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding support or developing clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives better information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
