About this resource and curriculum

(EYFS) is a warm, five-play Reception maths activity book mapped to the EYFS Mathematics Early Learning Goal — Numerical Patterns — and the Development Matters guidance on comparing quantities. Children spot which group has more or fewer, notice when two groups are exactly the same, count groups within 10 to compare them, match one-to-one at a teddy bears’ picnic (a plate for every teddy), and share snacks out fairly. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on drawing and playing tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

We are going to play five comparing games! Spot which group has more, which has fewer, and when two groups are exactly the same. Give a plate to every teddy and share snacks out fairly. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and play with your toys. Ask a grown-up to help — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) maths book about comparing quantities. Sit alongside your child and use real toys, buttons or snacks. Line two groups up, pair them one by one, count them, and chat about which has more, which has fewer, and when they are the same. Play the teddy picnic and fair-shares games with real things. There is no pass or fail — praise careful counting and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book covering comparing quantities from the EYFS Mathematics ELG — Numerical Patterns — and Development Matters: identifying more, fewer and the same (equal) within 10, counting to compare, one-to-one matching (a plate for every teddy) and fair sharing at snack time. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, practical drawing and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open playing and drawing tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with More, Fewer or the Same? (EYFS)

This parent guide connects the page examples with a usable study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what successful work should demonstrate.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to recognise the understanding, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise action words, values, clues, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a focused time window, remove interruptions and gather suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent first attempt so the attempt indicates sound understanding and doubt. A short pause often supports retrieval better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a extended problem into smaller steps, create a representation, organise evidence, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, provide a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights mistakes and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to locate the first point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short note of the change. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one independent check. This separates secure understanding from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps returning to terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding evidence or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
