About this resource and curriculum

Children listen for fast and slow and loud and quiet sounds, copy and continue body-percussion patterns like clap-clap-stamp, keep a steady beat to favourite songs, build a shaker from safe home materials, and finish with a little family music show of singing and dancing. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on making, singing and moving tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

Get the most from this

We are going to play five music games! Listen for fast and slow and loud and quiet sounds, clap a pattern with your hands and feet, tap the beat to a song you love, and make your very own shaker. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and make real music. Ask a grown-up to join in — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) music book about rhythm, pattern and sounds. Sit alongside your child and act everything out — whisper the quiet sounds, boom the loud ones, clap and stamp the patterns together, and build the shaker as a team. There is no pass or fail — praise brave singing, careful listening and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book covering early music from the EYFS Expressive Arts & Design area of learning and the Being Imaginative & Expressive ELG: identifying fast/slow and loud/quiet sounds, copying and continuing body-percussion patterns, keeping a steady beat to familiar songs, making a simple shaker from found materials, and performing through song and movement. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, practical making and performing tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; about 15 minutes; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open singing, making and moving tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with Music, Rhythm & Pattern (EYFS)

This parent guide connects the page examples with a practical study routine. The present resource is labelled Expressive Arts and Design, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what effective work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to predict the ideas, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and spot action words, quantities, signals, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a manageable time window, reduce interruptions and gather appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the response indicates secure understanding and gaps. A short pause often supports retrieval better than an instant answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a complex problem into individual steps, create a representation, sort details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, provide a graduated hint: state again the goal, point towards a useful example, reduce the choice, then show only the next step. Return control immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes confusions and practises clear subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to locate the opening point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short account of the improvement. For a correct answer, ask for justification and one self-directed check. This separates confident ideas from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, practising a calculation, adding details or refining clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and record answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
