About this resource and curriculum

Children meet the four seasons and what changes in each one — blossom, sunshine, falling leaves, frost and snow — learn weather words like rainy, windy, sunny and frosty, choose sensible clothes for each kind of weather, keep a simple three-day weather diary, and make real observations of nature through the window and on walks. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on looking, drawing and diary tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

Get the most from this

We are going to be weather watchers! Meet the four seasons, learn weather words like rainy and frosty, choose what to wear for each weather, and keep your very own weather diary. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and take it to the window. Ask a grown-up to help — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) Understanding the World book about seasons and weather. Sit by a window or step outside together. Let your child name the seasons, choose the day's weather word, pick clothes for the weather, and fill in a tiny three-day weather diary. There is no pass or fail — praise careful looking and lovely weather words.

A five-play Reception activity book for Understanding the World, covering seasons and weather towards the EYFS Natural World ELG: naming the four seasons and their observable changes (blossom, sunshine, falling leaves, frost and snow), everyday weather vocabulary (rainy, windy, sunny, frosty), dressing for the weather, a simple three-day weather diary, and first-hand observation of nature through the window. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open observation, drawing and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open looking, drawing and diary tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with Seasons & Weather Watch (EYFS)

This parent guide connects the page examples with a practical study routine. The present resource is labelled Understanding the World, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what secure work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and recognise command words, amounts, clues, constraints or new terms. Agree a realistic time window, clear distractions and prepare appropriate materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the attempt shows secure understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often supports recall better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, separate a larger problem into individual steps, sketch a diagram, arrange evidence, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, give a staged hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a relevant example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to locate the initial point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a brief account of the change. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one self-directed check. This distinguishes assured understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
