About this resource and curriculum

A grown-up reads an original mini-tale about Pip the hedgehog aloud, then children talk about the beginning, middle and end, learn story words like once upon a time, then and in the end, retell the tale in a puppet voice, make up their own ending and swap tiny tales at home. Two tales are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are open talking, drawing and home tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

Get the most from this

We are going to play five story games! A grown-up reads you our little tale about Pip the hedgehog, then you talk about what happened first, in the middle and at the end, tell it back in a funny puppet voice and make up your very own ending. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and snuggle up to share it. Ask a grown-up to read with you — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) speaking book about retelling and talking in sentences. Read the short in-book tale aloud in a cosy voice, chat about each question before your child chooses, and enjoy the puppet retelling and made-up endings together. There is no pass or fail — praise brave talking, story words like once upon a time, and having a go.

A five-tale Reception activity book covering retelling and speaking in sentences from the DfE EYFS framework and the Communication and Language ELG — Speaking: listening to a short original narrative, sequencing beginning, middle and end, using narrative connectives (once upon a time, then, in the end), retelling in own words with a puppet prop, and inventing an alternative ending. Tales 1–2 are auto-marked comprehension and vocabulary checks; Tales 3–5 are open oral, drawing and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Tales 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Tales 3, 4 and 5 are open telling and drawing tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy the storytelling together.

How to study with Story Talk: Tell Me a Tale (EYFS)

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The present resource is labelled Communication and Language, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to spot the understanding, terminology or plan they may need. Scan each sample and spot action words, amounts, hints, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a focused time window, clear interruptions and collect suitable materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the response reveals sound understanding and gaps. A reflective pause often strengthens remembering better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, divide a larger problem into shorter steps, draw a model, organise support, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another plan could work. When work stops, offer a staged hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then model only the next step. Return ownership immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to locate the opening point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a concise description of the change. For a correct answer, seek justification and one self-directed check. This distinguishes assured understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding support or improving clarity. Recheck that target later in the week because spaced review gives better information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
