What learners develop in Religious Education
Religious education helps pupils examine religious and non-religious worldviews through beliefs, sources, practices, communities and lived experience. Because RE is not specified as a national-curriculum programme of study, schools should select resources that match their locally agreed syllabus or other governing arrangements. Strong enquiry distinguishes description from interpretation, represents internal diversity and supports reasoned reflection without asking pupils to adopt a belief. Use texts, artefacts, accounts and case studies with clear context, compare viewpoints respectfully, and check that claims about a tradition are appropriately qualified rather than presented as universal.

Exploring religion and worldviews carefully
Religious education helps learners understand beliefs, practices and lived worldviews while developing thoughtful responses to important questions. Avoid assuming that every member of a tradition believes or behaves in the same way. Use specific examples, identify the community or source involved, and distinguish an official teaching from the varied ways people interpret and practise it.
Good enquiry compares evidence and viewpoints without turning difference into a simple right-or-wrong contest. Learners should explain how a belief may influence action, evaluate a claim with reasons and listen respectfully to experiences unlike their own. Sacred texts, objects, places, testimony and demographic evidence each provide different insights and have different limits. Accurate terminology and careful attribution matter throughout.
