About this resource and curriculum

Children match baby animals to their grown-ups (lamb and sheep, chick and hen, puppy and dog), talk about where animals live on the farm, at home and in the wild, discover that seeds need water and light to grow, put the seed-to-flower story in order, and practise caring for pets and plants at home. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on talking, drawing and growing tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

We are going to play five nature games! Match baby animals to their grown-ups, find out what a tiny seed needs to grow, draw the seed-to-flower story, and help care for pets and plants at home. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and play with real seeds and toys. Ask a grown-up to help — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) book about animals and growing things. Sit alongside your child and use real pets, soft toys, garden plants and picture books. Chat about baby animals and their grown-ups, where animals live, and what seeds and plants need: seeds need water and suitable warmth to sprout, and green plants need light to grow healthily. If you can, plant some cress together and watch it sprout. There is no pass or fail — praise careful noticing and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book covering animals and growing things from the EYFS framework, mapped to the Understanding the World ELG — The Natural World: matching baby animals to adults (lamb/sheep, female chick/hen, puppy/dog), animal habitats (farm, home, wild), water and suitable warmth for seeds to germinate, and light for healthy green plant growth, the seed-to-flower sequence, and caring for living things. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, practical drawing and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open talking, drawing and caring tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with Animals & Growing Things (EYFS)

This parent guide relates the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Understanding the World, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what successful work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to identify the knowledge, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify action words, values, hints, conditions or unfamiliar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce diversions and collect appropriate tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the work indicates firm understanding and uncertainty. A reflective pause often aids remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, break a larger problem into individual steps, draw a model, organise support, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their approach fits and whether another plan could work. When progress stops, offer a carefully scaled hint: state again the goal, point towards a related example, reduce the choice, then model only the next step. Return responsibility directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights mistakes and practises clear subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the initial point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a concise description of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one independent check. This separates confident knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps returning to terminology, repeating a calculation, adding support or refining clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and capture answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
