About this resource and curriculum

Children practise holding a pencil with a comfortable grip, tracing lines, curves, zig-zags and patterns, tracing and forming letters and numbers, using scissors to snip and cut, and building finger strength through threading, tweezers, pegs and playdough. There is no pass or fail: most of the book is hands-on tracing, cutting and threading play, printed on paper, with just a few tap-and-check questions and a full answer key. Warm, parent-led and playful, with teacher, parent and pupil notes and high-contrast and large-text modes.

Study guidance and sample questions

Get the most from this

Get your busy fingers ready! Trace the wavy lines, curves and zig-zags, trace some letters and numbers, and snip along the dotted lines with a grown-up. Tap an answer on the little questions and I'll check it — the rest is just happy, busy-hands play. There is no getting it wrong here!

This is a gentle Reception (EYFS) fine motor activity book. Sit alongside your child with a pencil, child-safe scissors and, if you can, some beads, pegs, tweezers or playdough. Keep it short and playful — five to ten minutes is plenty. Praise the effort and enjoyment, not the neatness; every wobbly line is building the muscles for writing and drawing.

A five-play Reception activity book supporting the Fine Motor Skills strand of Physical Development (DfE EYFS / Development Matters): holding a pencil with a comfortable grip, tracing lines, curves, zig-zags and patterns, forming letters and numbers, using scissors to snip and cut, and threading, tweezers, pegs and playdough for finger strength. Mostly open hands-on tracing and cutting tasks with a few very simple tap-and-check questions; no pass/fail tone. Suitable for guided or parent-led use.

Only a few little questions about pencils and scissors are auto-checked with the "Check my answers" button. Everything else — tracing, cutting and busy-hands play — is open and hands-on, so there is nothing to mark as right or wrong. Look at the actual tracing and cutting and celebrate it together.

How to study with Busy Fingers: Fine Motor Fun (EYFS)

This parent guide connects the page examples with a structured study routine. The current resource is labelled Physical Development, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to spot the understanding, language or plan they may need. Scan each sample and spot action words, values, hints, limits or less familiar terms. Agree a focused time window, reduce interruptions and collect useful tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the response reveals sound understanding and doubt. A quiet pause often aids remembering better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a extended problem into individual steps, sketch a diagram, sort support, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another plan could work. When progress stops, offer a graduated hint: state again the goal, point towards a relevant example, narrow the choice, then demonstrate only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes confusions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a brief note of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for reasoning and one self-directed check. This distinguishes confident understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, practising a calculation, adding support or improving clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and note answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
