About this resource and curriculum

Four demanding challenges push confident talkers through listening for detail in a short passage, telling open and closed questions apart, explaining and justifying opinions with connective words such as because and so, and using discussion-role vocabulary such as chairperson and contribution. Challenges 1–4 hold auto-marked stretch questions with a full worked answer key; Challenge 5 is an open extended speaking task — planning, giving and reflecting on a short talk to a real listener. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

Get the most from this

These five challenges are the stretch set — harder talking and listening for when you want to push yourself. You will listen for tricky details, spot open and closed questions, explain with connective words, use discussion vocabulary, then plan and give your own short talk. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and take your time on paper. Aim to explain fully, not just answer quickly.

This is the greater-depth challenge workbook for KS1 spoken language (Year 1), for confident talkers who want a stretch. The questions are deliberately harder, ending in an open task where your child plans and gives a real short talk. Make time to be the genuine listener for Challenge 5, and talk through the reflection questions together afterwards.

A greater-depth, differentiated-up challenge book for DfE KS1 spoken language: listening for detail in a passage, distinguishing open and closed questions, explaining and justifying with connectives, and discussion-role vocabulary such as chairperson and contribution. Challenges 1–4 hold auto-marked stretch questions; Challenge 5 is an open extended speaking task — planning, giving and reflecting on a short talk. Ideal for high-attaining talkers or as preparation for KS2 discussion and debate work.

Challenges 1–4 are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback. Challenge 5 is an open speaking task and is not auto-marked — check the plan and reflection against the answer sheet notes.

How to study with KS1 English: Spoken Language — Challenge

This parent guide connects the page examples with a practical study routine. The present resource is labelled English, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what sound work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to identify the knowledge, language or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify action words, quantities, signals, limits or less familiar terms. Agree a manageable time window, reduce interruptions and prepare useful equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed initial attempt so the attempt reveals sound understanding and doubt. A quiet pause often aids retrieval better than an instant answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline key information, divide a extended problem into smaller steps, draw a show, sort details, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, offer a graduated hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return control directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights confusions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a short description of the change. For a correct answer, request reasoning and one self-directed check. This differentiates assured knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps returning to terminology, practising a calculation, adding details or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than instant repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
