blast through five quick-fire rounds: the mass and charge of protons, neutrons and electrons, atomic and mass number, counting particles in fresh atoms, isotopes and electronic structure (2,8,8), then Group 1, Group 7 and Group 0 trends. All 15 questions are auto-marked. About 10 minutes.

  • the sub-atomic particles โ€” the relative mass and charge of protons (+1), neutrons (0) and electrons (-1), and where they sit;
  • atomic number and mass number โ€” using protons, neutrons and mass number to fill in the missing value;
  • counting particles in fresh atoms and recognising isotopes (same protons, different neutrons);
  • electronic structure โ€” shells filling 2, 8, 8, the outer-shell count and the electron total;
  • the periodic table group trends โ€” Group 1 alkali metals, Group 7 halogens and Group 0 noble gases.

Activities in this book

  1. Round 1 โ€” Sub-atomic Particles: Mass & Charge

    protons have a relative mass of 1 and charge +1; neutrons have a relative mass of 1 and no charge; electrons are tiny (relative mass almost 0) with a charge of -1. Protons and neutrons sit in the nucleus; electrons whizz around in shells. Fire them off fast!

  2. Round 2 โ€” Atomic Number & Mass Number

    the atomic number is the number of protons; the mass number is protons + neutrons. So neutrons = mass number - atomic number, and a neutral atom has equal protons and electrons. Quick subtraction โ€” go!

  3. Round 3 โ€” Counting Particles & Isotopes

    in a neutral atom, electrons = protons = atomic number, and neutrons = mass number - atomic number. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same protons but different neutrons. Snap them out!

  4. Round 4 โ€” Electronic Structure

    electron shells fill from the inside out: 2 in the first shell, then 8, then 8. The last number of the structure is the outer-shell count, and all the numbers add up to the total number of electrons. Add them up fast!

  5. Round 5 โ€” Groups & Trends

    Group 1 = alkali metals (reactivity increases down the group); Group 7 = halogens (reactivity decreases down the group); Group 0 = the unreactive noble gases. Last round โ€” finish strong!

Suggestions for teaching

  • Speed with accuracy. Encourage quick recall, but always check the direction of a subtraction โ€” neutrons = mass number - atomic number, not the other way round.
  • Particles on demand. Drill the mass-and-charge table (proton +1, neutron 0, electron -1) until it is automatic.
  • Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
