Round 1 โ Sub-atomic Particles: Mass & Charge
protons have a relative mass of 1 and charge +1; neutrons have a relative mass of 1 and no charge; electrons are tiny (relative mass almost 0) with a charge of -1. Protons and neutrons sit in the nucleus; electrons whizz around in shells. Fire them off fast!
Round 2 โ Atomic Number & Mass Number
the atomic number is the number of protons; the mass number is protons + neutrons. So neutrons = mass number - atomic number, and a neutral atom has equal protons and electrons. Quick subtraction โ go!
Round 3 โ Counting Particles & Isotopes
in a neutral atom, electrons = protons = atomic number, and neutrons = mass number - atomic number. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same protons but different neutrons. Snap them out!
Round 4 โ Electronic Structure
electron shells fill from the inside out: 2 in the first shell, then 8, then 8. The last number of the structure is the outer-shell count, and all the numbers add up to the total number of electrons. Add them up fast!
Round 5 โ Groups & Trends
Group 1 = alkali metals (reactivity increases down the group); Group 7 = halogens (reactivity decreases down the group); Group 0 = the unreactive noble gases. Last round โ finish strong!
Suggestions for teaching
- Speed with accuracy. Encourage quick recall, but always check the direction of a subtraction โ neutrons = mass number - atomic number, not the other way round.
- Particles on demand. Drill the mass-and-charge table (proton +1, neutron 0, electron -1) until it is automatic.
- Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
