Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Reactivity Order
the reactivity series runs from most reactive (potassium) at the top to least reactive (gold) at the bottom. Learn the order: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, copper, gold.
Round 2 โ Metals with Acids & Water
metal + acid makes a salt + hydrogen; a reactive metal + water makes a metal hydroxide + hydrogen. Both reactions release hydrogen gas.
Round 3 โ Oxidation & Reduction
in terms of oxygen: oxidation is the gain of oxygen and reduction is the loss of oxygen. When magnesium burns it gains oxygen, so it is oxidised.
Round 4 โ pH & Salts
the pH scale runs 0 to 14: below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral, above 7 is alkaline. Neutralisation makes a salt and water, and the acid names the salt: hydrochloric acid makes chlorides.
Round 5 โ Electrolysis
electrolysis splits ionic compounds when molten or dissolved. Positive ions go to the cathode (negative electrode); negative ions go to the anode (positive electrode).
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it timed. Set a short clock and run all five rounds in one go, then repeat to beat the previous score.
- Say the keyword aloud. Insist on the exact term โ oxidised, reduced, anode, cathode โ not a vague description.
- Anchor to the reactivity series. Reuse the same ordered list for displacement, reactions and extraction choices.
