blast through five quick-fire rounds: name hydrocarbons and use CnH2n+2, follow crude oil through fractional distillation, sort complete from incomplete combustion and explain cracking, test alkenes and build addition polymers, then calculate an Rf value and fire off the gas tests. Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Hydrocarbons & Alkanes
hydrocarbons are molecules made of hydrogen and carbon only. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2. The first four are methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). Fire them off fast!
Round 2 โ Fractional Distillation
crude oil is separated into fractions by fractional distillation, according to boiling point. Going down the column the boiling point, viscosity and colour increase while flammability decreases. Bitumen (bottom) surfaces roads; petrol (top) fuels cars.
Round 3 โ Combustion & Cracking
complete combustion of a hydrocarbon gives carbon dioxide and water; incomplete combustion can give the toxic gas carbon monoxide. Cracking breaks long-chain hydrocarbons into shorter, more useful molecules. Snap them out!
Round 4 โ Alkenes & Polymers
alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with a C=C double bond; they decolourise orange bromine water (turning it colourless). Many small alkene monomers join to make a polymer by addition polymerisation. Race through!
Round 5 โ Analysis & Gas Tests
in chromatography, Rf = distance moved by the substance divided by distance moved by the solvent (always between 0 and 1). Gas tests: hydrogen gives a squeaky pop, oxygen relights a glowing splint, and carbon dioxide turns limewater milky. Finish strong!
Suggestions for teaching
- Speed with accuracy. Encourage quick recall, but always keep the Rf ratio the right way up โ substance รท solvent, so Rf is always between 0 and 1.
- Formulae on demand. Drill CnH2n+2 for alkanes so a learner can write hydrogens from the carbon count in seconds.
- Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
