Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Inside the Atom
quick recall: the atom has a tiny central nucleus of protons and neutrons, with electrons in shells around it. The atom is about 1ร10โปยนโฐ m across; the nucleus is about 1ร10โปยนโด m โ around ten thousand times smaller. Protons are positive, electrons negative, neutrons neutral.
Round 2 โ Isotopes & Ions
isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. An ion is an atom that has lost or gained electrons, so it has an overall charge. The atomic number tells you the number of protons.
Round 3 โ Radiation Types
alpha is a helium nucleus (2 protons + 2 neutrons), beta is a fast electron, gamma is a high-energy electromagnetic wave. Alpha is stopped by paper, beta by a few mm of aluminium, gamma only by thick lead. Alpha is the most strongly ionising, gamma the least.
Round 4 โ Decay Numbers
activity is the number of decays each second, measured in becquerel (Bq). In alpha decay the mass number falls by 4 and the atomic number falls by 2. In beta decay the mass number is unchanged and the atomic number rises by 1.
Round 5 โ Half-life Blitz
the half-life is the time for the activity (or number of undecayed nuclei) to halve. Halve again for each half-life: after n half-lives the fraction left is (ยฝ)โฟ. Count the halvings to work out how many half-lives fit a drop in activity.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it fast. This is a timed-feel recall drill โ aim for about 10 minutes and speed, not long working.
- Halve, then halve again. Remind learners that each half-life halves the activity, so counting the halvings gives the number of half-lives.
- Sort the radiations. Drill the paper / aluminium / lead penetration order and the alpha โ gamma ionising order.
- Numbers matter. Activity is in becquerel; the alpha-decay mass number falls by 4.
