Round 1 โ Name That Store
quick recall: kinetic (movement), gravitational potential (height), elastic potential (stretch), thermal (hot), chemical (fuels, food, batteries) and nuclear. Energy is transferred by heating, waves, electrically or mechanically.
Round 2 โ Kinetic Energy Blitz
Ek = ยฝmvยฒ. Square the speed first, then halve. Answer in joules (J).
Round 3 โ Lift It Up (GPE)
GPE = mgh. Use g = 10 N/kg for a clean, fast answer (the exam accepts g = 9.8 too). Answer in joules.
Round 4 โ Heat & Power
E = mcฮฮธ for warming things (water c = 4200 J/kgยฐC). Power P = E/t in watts (W): 1 W = 1 J per second.
Round 5 โ Efficiency & Resources
efficiency = useful output รท total input ร 100%. Renewables (wind, solar, hydro) never run out; fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) do.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it fast. This is a timed-feel recall drill โ aim for about 10 minutes and speed, not long working.
- Square first for Ek. Remind learners to square the speed before halving in Ek = ยฝmvยฒ.
- Clean g. Using g = 10 keeps GPE answers quick; mention g = 9.8 is also accepted in the exam.
- Units matter. Energy in joules, power in watts, efficiency as a percentage.
