Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Scalars, Vectors & Weight
a scalar has size only (mass, speed, distance); a vector has size and direction (force, weight, velocity). Weight is gravity on a mass: W = m ร g. Go fast โ here we use g = 10 N/kg to keep the numbers clean!
Round 2 โ Resultant Force & F = ma
the resultant force is the single force left after adding forces along a line. Newton's second law: F = m ร a. Quote the equation, put the numbers in, then calculate โ at speed!
Round 3 โ Acceleration & Graphs
acceleration a = ฮv รท t, measured in m/sยฒ. On a velocityโtime graph the gradient is the acceleration and the area under the line is the distance. Watch the change in velocity โ final minus start!
Round 4 โ Work Done & Hooke's Law
work done W = F ร s (in joules) โ force times distance moved in the direction of the force. Hooke's law F = k ร e โ spring constant times extension. Keep the units straight and go!
Round 5 โ Stopping Distance & Momentum
stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance. Momentum p = m ร v (kg m/s) is a vector. Last round โ finish strong!
Suggestions for teaching
- Equation first. Encourage quick recall, but always quote the equation and substitute with units before calculating.
- Vectors vs scalars. Keep sorting quantities into scalar (size only) and vector (size and direction) until it is automatic.
- Little and often. A ten-minute burst like this is ideal as a lesson starter or a warm-up before a longer revision session.
