Activities in this book

  1. Round 1 โ€” Density Blitz

    density = mass รท volume, ฯ = m/V. Keep units consistent (g with cmยณ, or kg with mยณ). Divide the mass by the volume and answer in g/cmยณ.

  2. Round 2 โ€” Name That State

    in a solid, particles are packed in a regular pattern and vibrate in fixed positions; in a liquid they are still close but disordered and can flow; in a gas they are far apart, move quickly and can be compressed.

  3. Round 3 โ€” Changes of State

    changes of state are physical changes: no new substance is made and the total mass is conserved. Solidโ†’liquid is melting, liquidโ†’gas is boiling, gasโ†’liquid is condensing, liquidโ†’solid is freezing.

  4. Round 4 โ€” Heat & Latent Heat

    E = mcฮ”ฮธ to warm something up (water c = 4200 J/kgยฐC, copper c = 385 J/kgยฐC). E = mL to change its state (latent heat of fusion of ice = 334 000 J/kg). Answers in joules.

  5. Round 5 โ€” Gas Pressure

    gas pressure comes from particles colliding with the walls of the container. Heat a fixed-volume gas and the pressure rises. For a fixed mass at constant temperature, pโ‚Vโ‚ = pโ‚‚Vโ‚‚.

Suggestions for teaching

  • Keep it fast. This is a timed-feel recall drill โ€” aim for about 10 minutes and speed, not long working.
  • Consistent units. For density, insist on g with cmยณ before dividing mass by volume.
  • Two heat equations. Use E = mcฮ”ฮธ only when the temperature changes and E = mL only during a change of state.
  • Units matter. Density in g/cmยณ, energy in joules, pressure in kPa.
