About this resource and curriculum

Challenges 1-4 hold around sixteen auto-marked questions on fractions of larger quantities and sets, thirds and quarters equivalence reasoning, counting in fractions beyond one whole, and spotting incorrect fraction reasoning. Challenge 5 is an open, greater-depth reasoning task connecting equal size (not equal shape), equivalence, and a real-life recipe problem. A full worked answer key, including model reasoning for the open challenge, is included alongside teacher, parent and pupil guidance.

Get the most from this

Five tougher challenges to really stretch your fraction skills — bigger numbers, trickier equivalence questions, counting past one whole, and spotting fraction mistakes. Challenge 5 is open, so write your full reasoning, not just an answer. Take your time and explain your thinking — that is what makes this a real challenge. Answer on screen and I’ll check the first four challenges, or print the book to work through on paper.

This is a stretching KS1 fractions challenge book for a confident learner. The first four challenges are self-marking and use bigger numbers and trickier reasoning than a typical KS1 book. The final challenge is open-ended, greater-depth reasoning — there is no single right way to write it, so talk it through together rather than marking it right or wrong. Allow around 30 minutes.

A greater-depth challenge book for DfE Year 2 fractions. Challenges 1-4 hold sixteen auto-marked questions on fractions of larger quantities and sets, thirds/quarters equivalence reasoning, counting in fractions beyond one whole, and identifying incorrect fraction reasoning. Challenge 5 is an open, non-auto-marked greater-depth task exploring equal size versus equal shape, the link between unit fractions and multiples, and a real-life recipe application. Suitable for extending secure Year 2 fractions learners or as a challenge station.

Challenges 1-4 are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each response and gives instant feedback. Challenge 5 is an open reasoning task that is not auto-marked — check it against the model reasoning and marking notes on the answer sheet.

How to study with KS1 Mathematics: Fractions — Challenge

This parent guide connects the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 2, Activity Book. Use that context, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what firm work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to predict the ideas, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and identify instruction words, quantities, signals, constraints or unfamiliar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce diversions and collect suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an independent initial attempt so the response reveals firm understanding and doubt. A reflective pause often supports retrieval better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, break a extended problem into shorter steps, create a show, organise evidence, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, provide a carefully scaled hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes mistakes and practises specific subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to locate the initial point where their reasoning changed path. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a short account of the correction. For a correct answer, seek justification and one independent check. This separates confident ideas from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, practising a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives better information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
