About this resource and curriculum

Across five gentle plays, children compare size using everyday words (big and small, tall and short, long and short), feel heavy and light, fill containers full and tip them empty, put two or three objects in order from smallest to biggest, and talk about day and night, the days of the week and the parts of the day such as morning, lunchtime and bedtime. A few friendly questions can be tapped and checked on screen, while most of the book is hands-on play with real things at home. There is no pass or fail. The whole book can be printed with a full answer key, and it offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

Get the most from this

You're going to play five measuring games! Some questions you can tap and I'll check them for you, and lots of the book is fun to do with real things at home — cups, toys and shoes. There's no getting it wrong here, so just enjoy measuring and comparing!

This is a very gentle Reception (EYFS) maths activity book about measuring. Sit alongside your child and use real objects — lift things to feel heavy and light, fill and empty cups, and line up toys by size. Chat in comparing words (taller, heavier, full, empty) and talk about day, night and the days of the week. There is no pass or fail — it is all about happy, playful exploring.

A five-play Reception activity book covering the DfE EYFS Development Matters Measures ideas: comparing size (big/small, tall/short, long/short), weight (heavy/light), capacity (full/empty), comparing and ordering two or three objects, and time (day and night, days of the week, sequencing daily events). Plays 1–2 include a few auto-checked questions; Plays 3–5 are open, hands-on tasks. Suitable for guided or home use, with no pass/fail framing.

Plays 1 and 2 have a few questions you can tap and check with the "Check my answers" button, which gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open play tasks and are not auto-marked — enjoy them together and use the answer sheet notes as a guide.

How to study with Measuring Fun (EYFS)

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what successful work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to spot the knowledge, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and spot command words, amounts, hints, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a focused time window, remove diversions and gather appropriate equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the work reveals secure understanding and doubt. A short pause often aids remembering better than an same-session answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, break a extended problem into shorter steps, sketch a show, organise details, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, offer a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a relevant example, reduce the choice, then show only the next step. Return control immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights confusions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final work: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a short description of the change. For a correct answer, request support and one self-directed check. This differentiates confident knowledge from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps returning to terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding details or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than same-session repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
