About this resource and curriculum

Children carry the counting song past 10 towards 20, discover that teen numbers are simply 10 and some more, continue and invent repeating patterns like red-blue-red-blue and clap-stamp, and pair toys up to explore odds and evens. Two plays are auto-marked on screen with instant feedback; the rest are hands-on making, pairing and spotting tasks a grown-up can share, and the whole book can be printed with a full answer key. Gentle and playful with no pass-or-fail tone. High-contrast and large-text modes are available.

We are going to play five pattern and number games! Count out loud past 10 towards 20, find the secret inside teen numbers, carry on patterns like red-blue-red-blue, and pair toys up to spot odds and evens. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and play with your toys. Ask a grown-up to help — this is just for fun.

This is a very gentle summer-term Reception (EYFS) maths book about patterns and numbers to 20 — lovely school-ready practice before Year 1. Sit alongside your child, count out loud together past 10, show teen numbers as ten fingers and some more toys, say patterns out loud so the rhythm gives the next one away, and pair socks or toys to peek at odds and evens. There is no pass or fail — praise careful counting and having a go.

A five-play Reception activity book covering the EYFS Mathematics ELG — Numerical Patterns: verbal counting beyond 10 towards 20, teen numbers as "10 and some more", continuing and creating repeating patterns (colour and body-action), and early odds and evens through pairing. Plays 1–2 are auto-marked; Plays 3–5 are open, practical pairing, making and home tasks. Playful and non-assessed in tone; suitable for summer-term transition, guided or parent-led use.

Plays 1 and 2 are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks each answer and gives friendly feedback. Plays 3, 4 and 5 are open pairing, pattern-making and home tasks that are not auto-marked — check them against the answer sheet notes and enjoy them together.

How to study with Patterns & Numbers to 20 (EYFS)

This parent guide relates the page examples with a structured study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, Early Years (EYFS), Reception, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what successful work should show.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to predict the understanding, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and recognise action words, amounts, clues, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a focused time window, reduce diversions and collect appropriate equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the response indicates sound understanding and doubt. A quiet pause often strengthens remembering better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline key information, separate a complex problem into individual steps, design a demonstrate, arrange support, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, give a graduated hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then demonstrate only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to find the first point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a brief account of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for support and one unaided check. This distinguishes confident understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, repeating a calculation, adding support or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide strengthens preparation, discussion and review.
