Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to identify the understanding, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify command words, quantities, signals, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a manageable time window, reduce diversions and gather appropriate equipment such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided opening attempt so the response shows secure understanding and uncertainty. A reflective pause often aids recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a larger problem into shorter steps, draw a diagram, organise support, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, give a staged hint: state again the goal, point towards a relevant example, limit the choice, then show only the next step. Return responsibility straight afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights confusions and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, support, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or fresh space, followed by a short account of the correction. For a correct answer, request justification and one unaided check. This distinguishes secure understanding from guessing while building accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small alternative by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one clear next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding support or refining clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than immediate repetition.
