Study guidance and sample questions

Get the most from this

Explore the lesson one part at a time. Pause to try an example, then explain or show what you noticed. Ask for help if you need it.

Explore this interactive lesson together, or let the learner try it independently where appropriate. Pause to talk about an idea or try it in another way.

A lesson view or time spent is not a best quiz score or a saved wrong-answer report. Ask what the learner can show or explain.

Use this interactive lesson to introduce or practise an idea. For England, check the relevant national curriculum programme of study where applicable; a stage label alone does not establish alignment.

A view or elapsed time is engagement information, not evidence of a scored assessment or a list of misconceptions. Check understanding through discussion or an example.

Ask the learner to show or explain one idea, then try a fresh example with suitable support. Note any prompts needed; retelling alone does not show secure understanding.

How to study with Why We Measure (and How)

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The present resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what successful work should demonstrate.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to recognise the ideas, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and recognise command words, values, clues, limits or unfamiliar terms. Agree a realistic time window, reduce distractions and prepare appropriate materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an self-directed opening attempt so the response shows sound understanding and gaps. A brief pause often aids recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking visible

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline key information, break a complex problem into individual steps, draw a show, organise evidence, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When work stops, offer a carefully scaled hint: state again the goal, point towards a useful example, narrow the choice, then show only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes mistakes and practises correct subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with visible answer guidance after honest effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to identify the opening point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a brief note of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for support and one self-directed check. This differentiates secure ideas from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and note answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.

Why measure?
Imagine your friend tells you their new pet snake is "really long". How long is "really long"? 20 cm? 2 metres? That's why we measure — to know exactly how big, long, or tall something is. You can use measurement for all sorts of things: Finding out if a sofa will fit in a room Knowing how tall you have…
Centimetres and metres
In Year 2 we use two units for length: cm Centimetres Small things A cm is about the width of your thumbnail. m Metres Big things A metre is about the height of a door handle. Rule of thumb: if you could fit it on your desk, use cm. If it's bigger than you, use m.
How to use a ruler
Reading a ruler is easy when you know the trick: Line up the start of the object with 0 on the ruler — NOT the very edge. Look at where the other end of the object lines up. Read the number. That's the length in cm. Common mistake: some children start at the edge of the ruler instead of 0.…
