What Year 1 covers
Year 1 is the first formal year of primary school. Pupils consolidate Reception phonics, begin reading independently, learn to write simple sentences, and start formal mathematics — number bonds, simple addition and subtraction, basic shape and measurement.
The Phonics Screening Check
In June of Year 1, every child in state schools sits the Phonics Screening Check. They decode 40 words (a mix of real and pseudo-words). Children who don’t meet the standard retake in Year 2. Our phonics resources are designed to build the decoding fluency needed.
