About this resource and curriculum

Five demanding challenges push confident learners through sorting letters across all four families — long ladder, curly caterpillar, one-armed robot and zig-zag monster — untangling harder tricky twin letters including n/u, m/w and a flipped number, spotting perfectly punctuated sentences with a capital letter and full stop, and learning proper handwriting vocabulary such as ascender, descender and baseline. Challenges 1–4 hold auto-marked stretch questions; Challenge 5 is an open task where the child writes and checks their own sentence against a full handwriting checklist, with a complete worked answer key. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

These five challenges are the stretch set — harder handwriting knowledge for when you want to push yourself. You will sort letters into all four families, untangle harder tricky twins, spot the perfectly punctuated sentence, learn proper handwriting words, then write and check your own sentence. Answer on screen and I'll check it, or print the book and take your time on paper. Look really closely at every clue!

This is the greater-depth challenge workbook for KS1 handwriting (Year 1), for confident learners who want a stretch. The questions cover all four letter families, harder tricky twins, punctuation spotting and proper handwriting vocabulary, ending in an open writing-and-checking task. Encourage your child to use the checklist every time they write. Challenge 5 is open-ended — talk it through together and check it against the answer key.

A greater-depth, differentiated-up challenge book for DfE KS1 handwriting: sorting letters across all four letter families, harder tricky twin pairs (n/u, m/w, b/d/p/q, plus a flipped number), spotting fully correct punctuation in sentences, and handwriting vocabulary (ascender, descender, baseline). Challenges 1–4 are auto-marked stretch questions; Challenge 5 is an open writing-and-self-checking task against a full handwriting checklist. Ideal for high-attaining KS1 learners or as a bridge into Year 2/3 handwriting expectations.

Challenges 1–4 are checked together with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback. Challenge 5 is open writing and self-checking and is not auto-marked — check it against the answer sheet notes and the checklist.

How to study with KS1 English: Handwriting — Challenge

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled English, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Activity Book. Use that setting, the learning summary and published prompts to decide what effective work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to predict the knowledge, vocabulary or plan they may need. Scan each sample and recognise instruction words, values, signals, conditions or unfamiliar terms. Agree a focused time window, remove distractions and collect suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the attempt reveals sound understanding and doubt. A quiet pause often aids recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to restate the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, divide a larger problem into individual steps, create a representation, sort evidence, practise a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another plan could work. When work stops, offer a staged hint: repeat the goal, point towards a related example, narrow the choice, then show only the next step. Return control immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning exposes confusions and practises specific subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, evidence, sequence, spelling or presentation where related. Ask the learner to find the first point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a short account of the improvement. For a correct answer, seek reasoning and one unaided check. This differentiates assured knowledge from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the central idea, process or fact again. Create one small variation by changing a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a related question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps reviewing terminology, rehearsing a calculation, adding evidence or refining clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives better information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and record answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide aids preparation, discussion and review.
