About this resource and curriculum

Built around one brand-new short story, “Ruby’s New Kite”, five short rounds drill quick reading skills: finding the key facts and characters, putting the sequence of events back in order, making simple inferences by working out why things happened, predicting what might happen next, and working out tricky vocabulary from the words around it. Every round is auto-marked on screen with a full answer key, or the whole book can be printed for a speedy reading challenge. Includes teacher, parent and pupil notes and offers high-contrast and large-text modes.

Get the most from this

Read Ruby's New Kite, then race through five fast rounds: find the facts, put the story in order, work out why things happened, guess what happens next, then crack the tricky words. Answer on screen and I'll check it for you, or print the book and read it on paper. Go as fast as you can!

This is a quick-burst KS1 reading comprehension practice (Year 1) — about ten minutes of fast recall built around one short story. Read the story aloud together once before your child starts, and let them check back at the words rather than guessing from memory.

All five rounds are checked with the "Check my answers" button, which marks every response and gives feedback straight away.

How to study with KS1 English: Reading Comprehension — Quick Burst

This parent guide connects the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled English Language, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Activity Book. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to clarify what sound work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus together. Ask the learner to anticipate the ideas, language or technique they may need. Scan each sample and identify command words, values, signals, conditions or new terms. Agree a manageable time window, reduce distractions and prepare suitable tools such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided opening attempt so the attempt reveals sound understanding and uncertainty. A brief pause often supports recall better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking published

Invite the learner to describe the task in their own words. They can underline essential information, break a larger problem into smaller steps, draw a representation, arrange details, rehearse a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their method fits and whether another method could work. When progress stops, offer a carefully scaled hint: repeat the goal, point towards a useful example, limit the choice, then model only the next step. Return ownership directly afterwards. Spoken reasoning reveals mistakes and practises specific subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with published answer guidance after sustained effort. Inspect more than the final attempt: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where useful. Ask the learner to find the opening point where their reasoning changed course. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or separate space, followed by a brief account of the correction. For a correct answer, ask for support and one unaided check. This differentiates secure ideas from guessing while developing accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the main idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by altering a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a similar question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one specific next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, repeating a calculation, adding details or developing clarity. Recheck that target afterwards in the week because spaced review gives stronger information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and make answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.
