Study guidance and sample questions

This guide is about the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and is for the adult helping you. Try one idea together; you do not need to complete this page independently.

This is a KS1 adult guide about the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. One idea to try together: Pair socks and count in twos together; ask how many socks there are in several pairs.

This guide has no on-page scored questions. A guide view or time on this page is not evidence of what your child knows, and this guide does not produce a child wrong-answer report. Keep a brief note of what you tried and what help was needed.

This guide helps adults support KS1 learners with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables; it is not a standalone pupil lesson. Suggest a practical pairs game to link counting in twos with groups of two.

No pupil answers are scored on this page. A guide view or elapsed time should not be treated as a class diagnostic result.

After trying an idea together, ask the child to explain how the pairs match the total count. Note any help given and choose a useful next step. Retelling the guide alone does not show mastery.

How to study with For Parents: Times Tables — Patterns & Tricks

This parent guide links the page examples with a usable study routine. The current resource is labelled Mathematics, Key Stage 1, Year 1, Year 2, E-Learning Module. Use that framework, the learning summary and published prompts to agree what sound work should reveal.

Prepare a focused session

Read the title and learning focus jointly. Ask the learner to spot the understanding, vocabulary or method they may need. Scan each sample and spot command words, quantities, clues, constraints or less familiar terms. Agree a manageable time window, remove diversions and prepare appropriate materials such as paper, pencil, ruler, coloured pens, calculator, headphones or a device. Encourage an unaided first attempt so the response shows sound understanding and gaps. A concise pause often supports remembering better than an immediate answer.

Make thinking shown

Invite the learner to summarise the task in their own words. They can underline necessary information, separate a extended problem into individual steps, make a demonstrate, organise details, compose a sentence or describe a planned method. Ask why their route fits and whether another method could work. When movement stops, provide a staged hint: rephrase the goal, point towards a relevant example, reduce the choice, then demonstrate only the next step. Return responsibility immediately afterwards. Spoken reasoning highlights misconceptions and practises accurate subject language.

Check accuracy and understanding

Compare the attempt with shown answer guidance after genuine effort. Inspect more than the final response: review the method, explanation, units, details, sequence, spelling or presentation where relevant. Ask the learner to locate the first point where their reasoning changed direction. Complete corrections actively in a different colour or new space, followed by a concise note of the improvement. For a correct answer, ask for support and one unaided check. This separates secure understanding from guessing while strengthening accuracy, reflection and careful working habits.

Consolidate and extend

Finish with retrieval from memory. Cover the example and ask for the core idea, process or fact again. Create one small adaptation by adjusting a value, condition, example, viewpoint or level of support while keeping the learning focus. Invite the learner to write a comparable question and supply checking guidance. Record one success and one precise next step, perhaps revisiting terminology, practising a calculation, adding details or improving clarity. Recheck that target again in the week because spaced review gives clearer information than immediate repetition.

The interactive player, downloadable file and complete answer material retain their existing access controls. The guide supports preparation, discussion and review.

Why these three tables?
Year 2 pupils are expected to recall the 2, 5, and 10 times tables fluently. The 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 come later (Years 3–4) for the Multiplication Tables Check. 2, 5, and 10 come first because they have the clearest patterns — and once your child sees patterns, multiplication stops feeling like memorising and starts feeling…
The patterns
×2 table — every answer is even. 2 × 1 = 2, ×2 = 4, ×3 = 6, ×4 = 8, ×5 = 10, ×6 = 12, ×7 = 14, ×8 = 16, ×9 = 18, ×10 = 20. Pattern: "skip count by 2". ×5 table — every answer ends in 5 or 0. ×1=5, ×2=10, ×3=15, ×4=20, ×5=25, ×6=30,…
Games to play
5 minutes a day beats 1 hour at the weekend. 1. Pairs game Pair up socks while counting: "2, 4, 6, 8..." Pair shoes, gloves, anything in twos. 2. Coin chain Set out 5p coins. "How much in 3 coins? In 6 coins?" Real money makes it stick. 3. The "I'll lose, then we'll race" trick Set a stopwatch. "Can…
