Activities in this book
Round 1 โ Photosynthesis Fire
photosynthesis happens in the chloroplasts, which hold the green pigment chlorophyll. It is endothermic โ it takes in energy from light. Word equation: carbon dioxide + water โ glucose + oxygen.
Round 2 โ Limiting Factor Blitz
a limiting factor is the one in shortest supply that holds back the rate. The three limiting factors of photosynthesis are light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature.
Round 3 โ Aerobic Respiration Sprint
aerobic respiration uses oxygen and mostly happens in the mitochondria. It is exothermic. Word equation: glucose + oxygen โ carbon dioxide + water.
Round 4 โ Anaerobic & Fermentation
without oxygen, muscle cells do anaerobic respiration to make lactic acid. In yeast and plants this is called fermentation: glucose โ ethanol + carbon dioxide. Anaerobic respiration transfers less energy per glucose.
Round 5 โ Oxygen Debt & Metabolism
after hard exercise the body needs extra oxygen โ the oxygen debt โ to break down the lactic acid that built up. Metabolism is the sum of all the reactions in a cell or the whole body.
Suggestions for teaching
- Keep it quick. Set a timer โ the point of a quick burst is fluent recall, not extended working.
- Little and often. Use these rounds as a warm-up or exit ticket rather than a full lesson.
- Drill the equations. Get both the photosynthesis and aerobic respiration word equations automatic.
