Activities in this book

1. Round 1 — Levels of Organisation

   living things are built in a hierarchy: cells → tissues → organs → organ systems. A tissue is a group of similar cells; glandular tissue makes and releases enzymes and hormones.

2. Round 2 — Digestion & Enzymes

   protease digests protein into amino acids; bile is made in the liver and neutralises stomach acid. Each enzyme has an optimum pH — the stomach protease works best in strong acid.

3. Round 3 — Food Test Blitz

   learn the reagent and the colour change: iodine tests starch (blue-black), Benedict’s tests reducing sugars (brick red when heated), Biuret tests protein (purple).

4. Round 4 — Heart & Blood Sprint

   the coronary arteries supply the heart muscle itself with oxygen. Blood carries red blood cells (oxygen), white blood cells (defence), platelets (clotting) and liquid plasma.

5. Round 5 — Plants & Health Finish

   tiny pores called stomata, opened and closed by guard cells, control gas exchange and water loss in a leaf. Obesity and a poor diet raise the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Suggestions for teaching

• Keep it quick. Set a timer — the point of a quick burst is fluent recall, not extended working.
• Little and often. Use these rounds as a warm-up or exit ticket rather than a full lesson.
• Pair reagent with colour. Drill each food test as a reagent-plus-colour-change pair (iodine → blue-black, Benedict’s → brick red, Biuret → purple).
